If you want to rock your meditation world, then the bija mantras could be just the thing for you. Yogapedia defines a bija mantra as a “one-syllable sound used in meditation or yoga practice. The Sanskrit phrase bija mantra directly means, “seed mantra” and is comprised of three little words; bija meaning seed, man meaning the mind or to think, and tra meaning an instrument.”

In chanting the bija mantras, we rest awareness into the Chakra that is associated with that bija mantra. This helps activate the energy of the Chakra.

The bija mantras and their Chakras

Lam – root chakra
Vam – sacral chakra
Ram – solar plexus chakra
Yam – heart chakra
Ham – throat chakra
Om – third eye chakra
Om – crown chakra

Change occurs with practice

When we activate the Chakras, we stir the ‘mud’ floating in our subconscious and bring it to the surface for examination in our meditation. This is a powerful practice when done over a long period of time. Like any of yoga practices we proceed with a gentleness towards our self.
